Design and Materials
Now that the house is done, it’s time to store all the tools and such. I started with a healthy budget (thankfully before everything went up) and planned from there. Parameters came pretty quick, as I wanted to challenge myself to try and not have to cut anything with this project (didn’t happen). The building also had to share a similar language with its mother, The Arc. It also had to protect my motorcycle from the elements.
Originally I thought my style was coming through in shape and color, but I’ve now discovered, I think my style is seen through the windows: both in shape and in placement. (But more of that soon.) Here are some of the early renderings and material choices. I felt the cladded look interrupted by the clean lines shared a similar speech to the r-panel on my house
The windows were second hand (We broke one trying to get it in the truck) and I decided to construct the building using cedar pickets that you would use for a fence. The roof was also used; shout out to my friend Enoch who gifted me a couple of sheets. My assumption is that pine and cedar hold a similar structural capacity…so I rolled with it. Instead of having 2” studs every 18” I did a 5/8” stud every 6 inches, so I think it equaled out. The test boards were nail gunned together and held quite well.
